I think it is helpful to acknowledge the possibility that you may have been underestimating you own resilience in the face of adversity. This is an important idea to consider, because another one of the reasons why people feel anxious is that they overestimate the risk that they are taking related to the anticipated situation, and underestimate their ability to cope with it. When you look back over your life, have there been times where you were sure that that you would not be able to cope with certain situations, only to find out afterwards that you did cope? Although you may be unsure of the conclusion I have just reached, here is the proof - you are still here. You have survived all of the situations that you have feared in the past. However obvious this statement sounds, and therefore easy to dismiss, if you can stay with this statement for a moment, you will begin to see its significance. You will be able to acknowledge that when you have faced events that seem difficult to bare, you have found that you are more resilient that you ever imagined. Developing your personal narrative to include thinking of yourself as being resilient, can help you manage future challenges in life.
